The New Honda Accord 2009 Black Colour

The next generations from Honda in this Year. This is Hoinda Accord 2009. Eighth generation of Honda Accord is very near to its release. So how would 2009 Honda Accord Coupe that is going to be launched around the spring or summer of 2008 look like.We have very little information on that but what we could claim is that it would very much resemble 2009 Honda Accord Coupe Concept, revealed in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We could very much expect a choice between 4-cylinder engine and a V6. The next generation V6 (with Honda’s i-VTEC variable valve timing) is going to be more fuel efficient as claimed by company. V6 with its Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology will surely make it possible as the technology de-activates every other cylinder when the car is cruising under light load to reduce fuel consumption. Once higher power is required engine runs with its all the cylinder activated. There is no doubt for the safety features of the future Honda Accord Coupe due to Honda’s Safety for everyone initiative. Honda has set up a baseline of safety features for all its future models. 2009 Honda Accord Coupe will be for sure have front and side-impact airbags for people sitting at front seats, the curtain style head protection airbags for both front and rear would fall in the basic safety features. The electronic stability control and advanced anti-lock brakes presence could not be denied. ACE i.e. Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure would be present which incorporates a front-end frame structure primarily designed to wholly soak up and dissolve crash energy over a big area in case of a frontal collision.

Honda City 2009

The Honda City 2009 priced at around RM90,000. The car’s refundable booking fee is RM2,000. There are 5 colors available, if I remember correctly: gold, silver, black, blue, and “polished metal metalic” (like gray).

I picked blue because it is special and unique. Honda City 2009 is the first Honda car with the color. For your information, there is NO red color Honda City 2009 in Malaysia.

I have a driving license 10 years ago, but I never drive a car since then. I will need some practices of driving before receiving my Honda City 2009.

For the past years, my friends and family have been fetching me here and there. I owe them too much. It is my turn to be their driver to pay them back. Also, many friends are looking forward to sit in my car

2009 Perodua MPV Rendered Speculation

The upcoming Perodua MPV is still pretty far off, set to roll off the production lines only in September 2009, but here is a rendered speculation by Theophilus Chin of how it will might look like. Based on an existing Toyota compact MPV, the styling for this three row MPV rendering is largely based off the Perodua Viva.

Perodua CEO Datuk Hafiz mentioned in an interview with The Edge Weekly earlier this year that we should think of the new Perodua MPV as a smaller Toyota Wish that will have three rows and sit 6 people comfortably (probably not 7 because of a Perodua’s typically compact size and thus reduced width).

It will be based on the recently announced new Indonesian-based MPV model that was announced in March this year and is currently still under development by Toyota and Daihatsu. Perodua will apply its own styling onto the model.

Look after the jump for a rear shot of Theophilus Chin’s rendering as well as some other photoshop “experiments”. PS: KSG = Kenderaan Serba Guna.

Official Toyota Vios pricelist!

UMW Toyota Motor has prices for the new second generation Toyota Vios up on its website. There has been a small drop in prices from the estimated values announced earlier at the media preview.

The top of the line Toyota Vios 1.5S is going for RM88,100 - down from the estimated RM88,600 announced earlier. The mid range Toyota Vios 1.5G goes for RM84,800, down from RM85,300 and finally the baseline Toyota Vios 1.5E now retails at RM78,700 - a RM200 drop to the previous RM78,900 price.

Toyota Camry with Aerokit available in Malaysia

Toyota is now offering the Toyota Camry in a new colour and with a new aerokit, of which both is shown above. The new colour is called White Pearl CS (070), with CS being an acronym for crystal. The new colour is only offered on the Toyota Camry 2.0G and the Toyota Camry 2.4V. Specifying this colour will cost an extra RM800.

As for the new Toyota Camry aerokit, it can be fitted on all models and all colours, but only as a factory-fit. Aftermarket retrofitting for existing Toyota Camry owners is not possible as Toyota says it will tamper with the vehicle’s original specifications as approved by Toyota Motor Co Japan. The aerokit is optional and costs RM2,200. It consists of a front lip, a rear lip, side skirts and a trunk lid spoiler. Warranty for the aerokit follows the Camry’s 3 year or 100,000km warranty.

Toyota Land Cruiser V8 launched in the UK

The new 8th generation Toyota Land Cruiser V8 has replaced its predecessor the Land Cruiser Amazon in the UK market. It continues the Land Cruiser’s trademark body on frame construction, which Toyota says tackles tough terrain better.

The new Land Cruiser V8 is powered by a new 4.5 liter D-4D common rail turbodiesel V8 engine. It produces 282 horsepower and 650Nm from a low 1,600rpm. It is engineered to work in temperatures from -30 to 50 degrees Celcius. It channels power through a 6-speed automatic gearbox with manual sequential gear selection and a set of low ratios. New to the Land Cruiser is the worlds first four-wheel Active Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension (4-Wheel AHC & AVS), a fully adjustable system that also provides spring rate control. It enhances wheel articulation to a point that the Land Cruiser is able to crawl over steps with a 630mm height difference without lifting a wheel off the ground! The Land Cruiser is also able to switch from H4 to the L4 set of low ratios without stopping - at up to speeds of 4.8 km/h.

The interior seats 7, and occupants are protected by 14 airbags including front knee airbags and curtain shield airbags along the entire length of the cabin. Creature comforts include four-zone climate control air conditioning, full-map satellite navigation, Bluetooth, rear parking monitor, nine-speaker sound system with six-DVD autochanger and leather upholstery. The ICE may be upgraded to an optional JBL audio system with iPod integration and rear LCD screens for watching DVDs.

Toyota uses TomTom for in-car GPS navigation

Toyota is now offering an integrated GPS navigation unit in the Toyota Yaris SR in the UK market, making it the first B-segment Toyota hatchback in the UK to offer such equipment in that segment.

The 2-DIN head-unit slots right into the space on the Yaris dashboard, and the head unit is badged Toyota, while the removable portable GPS unit is from TomTom. This Toyota-TomTom GPS unit is actually a rebadged Eclipse AVN2210p, and the integrated TomTom GPS is a TomTom DUO, powered by a SiRFstarIII GPS chipset. You can remove the TomTom Duo from the car and use it to navigate while you are walking, or whatever reason you might want to use it out of your car.

The new head unit offers 3.5 inch touch screen operation, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free, and USB connection for MP3 players. It can also interface with an iPod.

Honda is another Japanese car maker who has paired up with an existing GPS navigation equipment manufacturer - the Gathers Honda infotainment and GPS system that was offered with Honda Accords purchased in December last year is based on a Garmin unit. Volvo Malaysia also offers Volvo-branded Garmin GPS units in their cars.

New Toyota Urban Cruiser unveiled at Geneva

Toyota has unveiled the Toyota Urban Cruiser at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is essentially the Japanese market Toyota ist, which is in turn a restyled version of the American market Scion xD.

So we have the Urban Cruiser for Europe, the ist for Japan and the xD for the USA. Toyota says the Toyota Urban Cruiser was developed to fill up the void that the discontinued three-door version of the Toyota RAV4 left behind.

The New Toyota Sportcar…A Hybrid?2009

There have been rumors for years now that Toyota has been prepping a replacement for its flagship Supra sportscar.

The Supra was one of the most popular tuner cars of the ’90’s and continues to be regarded as one of the ultimate Japanese rockets.

At the recent Detroit Auto Show, Toyota shocked the world with what may be the actual Supra replacement. Currently dubbed the FT-HS concept, this super-Toyota is actually a hybrid! It is powered by both an electric motor and a 3.5 liter V6 motor, good for over 400 horsepower. You know this is car is coming close to supercar territory when it promises to propel you to 60 mph in around 4 seconds!

This sports car is a 2+2, meaning that it seats four. These photos don’t show us how big the back seat actually is, but I’m assuming that it’s painfully small. Rather than call the FT-HS a 2+2, Toyota should just say that the FT-HS has a deep package tray behind the front seats.

Many modern sportscars have engines in the 300-400 horsepower range, but the acceleration isn’t always there as today’s rides are heavier than ever. The FT-HS, on the other hand, is designed to be as light as possible. Given that, it is impressive that the FT-HS contains an automatically retractable hard-top!

Personally, I think this car is an amazing achievement in engineering. It will get excellent gas mileage being a hybrid and promises to be a true enthusiast’s sports car. Now you can impress your environmentally-conscious mom and wow your girlfriend at the same time!

Before getting too excited about this wonderful offering, remember, it is still a concept, meaning it has not gotten the final word to go to production just yet. Toyota should be revealing more details about the FT-HS concept within the next 6 months, including its planned release date.

2009 Toyota Tacoma Review

In the small to medium sized truck market, the 2009 Toyota Tacoma really stands out. Its medium size format, since the 2005 redesign, is far more suitable for the typical American truck buyer in terms of space, useful load, and interior roominess than the previous micro truck formats.Toyota’s quality is evident all over the vehicle, with its fit and function comparable to their renowned passenger car quality. The instrument panel layout is simple and easy to quickly scan, and all controls are right where they should be, allowing an intuitive driving experience even when driving it for the first time.

The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 159 horsepower while delivering an economical 20 mpg in the city and over 25 on the highway. A V-6 option is available for those seeking more power or interested in towing heavier loads and are willing to spend a little more for gas. The five-speed manual transmission is standard on the four-cylinder, and a four-speed automatic is an available as an option for the four-cylinder and standard on the V-6.

The Tacoma drives like a truck, responsive but with a stiff ride. It’s not as maneuverable as the older, smaller mini-pickups, but beats full sized trucks. Ideally it is suited as a work vehicle instead of the car-like ride some larger trucks offer. The interior is roomy but more utilitarian than luxurious.

The bed of the Tacoma is made of a composite material, more rugged and lighter than the old corrugated steel beds most people have gotten used to seeing in pickups. Unusual for a mid-sized pickup, the load rating is ¾ tons.

The Tacoma comes with some nice standard features including AM/FM/CD stereo, anti-lock brakes, tilting and telescoping steering column, airbags, stability control and tire pressure monitors. There is a long list of optional extras, too. The TRD off-road package adds utility to those interested in off-roading, and two other optional packages are offered, the Pre-Runner for high performance off-road use, and the X-Runner for high performance on the streets.

The Tacoma is a good buy for a medium sized truck. It’s economical to operate, has all the features a good work or play truck could need, and with an impressive list of options, it allows the buyer to tailor their truck to their personal usage requirements.

Toyota Going All Hybrid By 2020

Toyota, the company that introduced the very popular Prius hybrid to the U.S. market in 2001, is now leading the way towards a complete hybrid lineup by the year 2020.

The automaker says it's working toward the goal of offering a hybrid version of all its vehicles by 2020--while still allowing for other fuels in its lineup, including gasoline alone.

This is not all altruism and concern for the environment on Toyota's part; GM, Ford, Nissan and Honda are causing the competition for environmentally-minded drivers' dollars and euros to heat up. GM's 2011 Chevrolet Volt promises to cut into the Prius' market share, and Honda will be tossing its own hat into the ring at the 2008 Paris Auto Show with a new 2010 Insight hybrid vehicle that is smaller and cheaper. Ford's forthcoming Fusion and Milan hybrid promise to offer greater economy than the Camry hybrid, while rival Nissan will be introducing an all-electric vehicle for sometime after 2010.

The Prius of course is not Toyota's only current hybrid offering. The success of the Prius has led to hybrid versions of several other popular Toyota models, including the Camry, the Highlander, and - over at the company's Lexus Division - the GS and LS sedans. The new Toyota A-BAT pickup, which shares the Prius' Hybrid Synergy Drive System, may bring out the Prius' appeal in men who - either for work reasons or for image - must simply have a pickup truck.

It seems like an ambitious project, creating a full-line of hybrid vehicles within little over a decade - but times and conditions call for such ambition, and if "market forces" can spur environmental innovation, so much the better.

2008 Toyota Prius Review

If you don't know what Toyota's Prius is by now, you may want to ask the landlord of the rock you're living under if they can turn it over for some fresh air.

The Prius is the world's best-known, best-selling hybrid--and for 2008, it's pretty much unchanged from the form it arrived in for the 2005 model year.

The EPA has said that the 2008 Toyota Prius (a descriptive Latin term meaning "that which came before") is now that "most fuel efficient car sold in the U.S."

The Prius gets green by mating its small gas engine to electric motors and batteries. Between the 1.5-liter gasoline engine and the two electric motors, there's only 110 horses under the hood. That doesn't make for great acceleration when taking off from a dead stop, but once at driving speed, it acquits itself as well as most economy cars. Between the electric motors and the continuously variable transmission (which keeps the engine speed in its optimal range at all times), the 2008 Toyota Prius can travel up to 48 miles on a gallon of gasoline on the open road (45 in town).

In short, there's little doubt that the 2008 Toyota Prius is miserly when it comes to liquid fuel consumption - and the regenerative brakes that work with the gasoline engine to keep the batteries charged means that plugging it into an outlet is not necessary.

There's another component to the 2008 Toyota Prius' fuel economy - and that's its lightweight materials and aerodynamic design. When the new design was released in 2004, many people considered the Prius' design to be "cutting edge." Some consumers today are finding the 2008 Toyota Prius styling a bit dated, however.

One thing the Prius offers beyond all doubt is safety; visibility is excellent, the dash is still strikingly modern, and the car will stop on a proverbial dime. In addition, the 2008 Toyota Prius has earned superior scores in crash tests conducted by the federal government and the insurance industry (the latter being notoriously hard-to-please).

The only environmental question here is the battery, which contains toxic materials, and are expensive to replace However, Toyota reports that with proper maintenance, the Prius' batteries can last throughout the useful life of the vehicle itself, and are recyclable as well.

2009 Toyota Camry Review

It's a rare vehicle that offers everything - at least at a price that people can afford or are willing to pay. The 2009 Toyota Camry is one of those vehicles that is relatively unexciting. It is however, efficient, reliable, and reasonably safe. The base model offers a 2.4-liter, 158-hp engine with a choice of either a manual or automatic five-speed transmission. A 3.5-liter, 268-hp engine with six-speed automatic is optional. The 2009 Toyota Camry comes in numerous trims that range from the very basic CE to the decadent luxury that is the top-of-the-line XLE. A "sport" trim, the SE, is somewhere in the middle.

Despite its rather pedestrian styling and somewhat cheap interior materials, the 2009 Toyota Camry has a great deal of passenger room - even in the back seat, amazingly enough. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power driver's seat and door locks, and a CD player. Available options include a deluxe JBL sound system, DVD navigation and Bluetooth wireless capability.

In terms of safety, the 2009 Toyota Camry got good marks all-around in federal government crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2009 Toyota Camry a "Good" rating in all areas tested except rear impact.

The top-of-the-line V-6 2009 Toyota Camry XLE with all the bells and whistles will run you around $35,000. That's not chump change, mind you, but it isn't bad compared to a comparable BMW or Mercedes. It may lack the sporty excitement of the former and the refinement of the latter, but it will definitely get you to wherever you need to go in reasonable safety - without having to ride with your knees jammed up under your nose.

Toyota's Prius Pickup: The A-BAT

Earlier this year, Toyota showed a new small pickup truck as a concept car dubbed the A-Bat. That Detroit auto show concept seems to be headed for production, as word has it that Toyota is looking for partsmakers to help it figure out how much it could charge for such a truck. If you missed it last January, the 2008 Toyota A-BAT is more like a Ranchero or El Camino than it is an F-150 or Silverado - and its similarities to its passenger car counterpart extend well beneath the skin.

Outside, the 2008 Toyota A-BAT is more like its cousin, the Prius, with a short front end and sweeping lines suggesting that it is indeed a 21st-century vehicle. Underneath, the A-BAT shares the Prius' Hybrid Synergy Drive System and a "traditional ladder frame," unibody construction, a passenger-car type suspension and overall reduced dimensions - making for handling that is very sedan-like.

Inside and even atop the four-passenger cab, high-tech goodies abound - including solar panels on the roof for running the nav system, and an AC/DC portable power pack into which one can plug everything from a laptop computer to power tools (handymen, take note).

The only drawback to the 2008 Toyota A-BAT's design is its undersized bed - a mere four feet in length. Although there is a "pass-through" that extends the bed two feet into the cab and fold-down seats as well as a bed floor that slides out for additional length and other storage options, it remains to be seen if the 2008 Toyota A-BAT can really be as functional as the Tacoma.

Toyota Press Conference

At the 2009 North American International Auto Show, Toyota debuted the third-generation Prius to the world.

Bob Carter, Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. said of the new Prius at the press conference, that it is “the all-new version of the vehicle that served as the catalyst for Toyota’s commitment to preserving and improving the world in which we live.”

In 1997, the Prius went on sale in Japan as the world’s first mass-produced gas-electric hybrid vehicle. Today, the Prius is the world’s best-selling hybrid with more than one million sold across 44 countries and regions.

Toyota plans to sell the new Prius in eighty countries worldwide in the future. That will put the Prius near the top of Toyota’s best-selling vehicles around the world along with the Camry and Corolla.

According to Carter, the Prius has evolved to meet the changing needs of its growing and diverse customer base.

Carter says, “The new Prius will achieve an estimated combined 50 miles per gallon, thanks to its unique shape, a larger engine, and smaller, more efficient hybrid components.”

Toyota hasn’t made a radical change to the design, mainly because it’s the most aerodynamic shape available and partly because the Prius’ silhouette is iconic – you can spot a Prius from 100 yards away.

Its sleek design means the new Prius has a point-two-five coefficient of drag, making it the world’s most aerodynamic production vehicle.

The new Prius, unlike most of its competitors, will still be a full hybrid utilizing Hybrid Synergy Drive, running on either gas alone, electric power alone, or a combination of both.

HONDA FREED

The new Honda Freed was unveiled today in Tokyo. The Freed is compact minivan, based on the new 2009 Honda Jazz. While the Freed retains the same width as the Jazz / Fit at 1,695 mm, it’s longer (4,215 mm vs 3,900 mm), higher (1,715 mm vs 1,525 mm) and it also features an extended wheelbase measuring 2,740 mm in length (vs 2,500 mm).

Honda will offer three variants the Freed on local market: a seven-passenger edition; an eight-passenger version and a five-passenger type which offers a large cargo space. All three variants of the Freed are also equipped with sliding rear doors on either side of the vehicle.

2009 Honda Freed will be offered in front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants, both of which are equipped with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder that delivers an output of 120Hp. No word about the Freed will find its way out of the Japan.

Honda New Insight Hybrid

By John O'Dell, Senior Editor

As promised, Honda has released the first official photo of its new Prius-fighter, the 2010 Honda Insight hybrid.

Smaller than the Honda Civic Hybrid but still a five-seat vehicle, the new Insight (right) is expected to be priced at under $20,000, making it the least-expensive hybrid on the market when it goes on sale next year.

Although still called a "concept," the car pictured is not expected to be much different from the production version that will be introduced in the flesh (so to speak) on Oct. 2 at the Paris Motor Show.

The Insight, a five-door hatchback sedan, takes many of its styling cues from Honda's FCX Clarity fuel-cell electric car, Honda says - ignoring critics who say it owes a lot of its look to Toyota's Prius, the world's best-selling hybrid.(Honda probably wouldn't be hurt if that association was to be made by a lot of buyers, but we're not going to suggest that any resemblance to the Prius is intentional. Both cars were designed to minimize wind resistance, and that pretty much dictates the basic body shape.)

----------

Honda's Insight (right) and the CR-Z concept (left) borrow design cues from FCX Clarity fuel-cell car (center).

----------

Whatever it looks like, the new Insight - which takes its name from the original Honda hybrid, the two-seat Insight introduced in 1999 and discontinued in 2006 - sticks with Honda's proprietary Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system.

It is a somewhat downsized version of the system, though, likely with a smaller battery pack and power control unit than in the IMA system that helps propel the Civic Hybrid. A smaller car, however, can get away with a smaller hybrid system.

While not revolutionary on the technology side of things, the new Insight is a ground-breaker on the price front.

It "will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value," said Takeo Fukui, Honda chief executive.

The company wouldn't disclose fuel economy estimates, but one would expect a car that is lighter and more streamlined than the Civic hybrid to deliver better mileage.

Honda says the Insight will be followed - probably sometime in 2010 - by an all-new model based on the CR-Z sport coupe concept car shown at the Tokyo Auto Show in October, 2007.

Honda Says Global Sales of Its Hybrids Topped 300,000 in January

They're not too worried over at Toyota Motor Corp., the world's leader in sales of gas-electric cars and trucks, but Honda Motor Co. says that global sales of its hybrids have now topped the 300,000 mark.

----------

Civic hybrid is Honda's top-selling gas-electric model now...

----------

Honda began marketing hybrids in 1999 in Japan and the U.S. with the now discontinued two-seat Insight, beefed up its offerings in 2001 with a hybrid Civic and briefly added an Accord sedan to the lineup from 2004 through mid-2007.

The company said in a brief announcement today that it had sold 300,740 hybrid models around the world through Jan. 31.

Of the total, 234,252, or almost 78 percent, were sold in North America, with the U.S. market accounting for most of those sales.

...but expects the 2010 Insight to quickly overtake Civic as its leading hybrid model.

----------

Global sales of the new Insight are expected to top 200,000 a year, with half the total gobbled up by North American buyers.

The 2010 Insight already has gone on sale in Japan, where 5,000 orders in the first week outstripped Honda's expectations for the entire month.

The new hybrid goes on sale in the U.S. in April.

Worldwide, Honda's hybrid sales include 255,246 Civics, 28,471 Accords and 17,020 original Insights.

Heavyweight Japanese Consortium To Tackle Cellulosic Ethanol Development

It's seemed for the longest time that if a clean, economical form of ethanol was ever going to be developed, the cost and effort would be left largely up to researchers in the U.S. and Europe.

But Reuters is reporting that Japan has now gotten into the act in a serious way, with a consortium of major companies including Toyota Motor Corp. and Nippon Oil Corp. agreeing to set up a national research effort.

The companies want to develop a low-cost method of producing cellulosic ethanol - the kind that comes from the cellulose in wood chips, prairie grasses and waste biomass instead of that in food crops such as corn and sugar cane.

The Japanese cellulosic ethanol research isn't aimed at a particularly quick fix, though.

Reuters says the group's goal is to be producing about 1.6 million barrels a year by early 2014 and to get the cost down to the equivalent of $70 a barrel by 2015.

Among the companies joining Nippon Oil and Toyota in the consortium are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Sapporo engineering - a subsidiary of Sapporo Breweries, which churns out a lot of biomass waste from beer-making.

Toyota Unwraps EV Concept, Says Plug-Ins, More Hybrids On The Way

Toyota's concept electric vehicle is a light-duty runabout based on Japanese-market iQ commuter car.

By John O'Dell, Senior Editor

The battery-electric city car concept Toyota Motor Corp. will unveil Sunday afternoon in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show is confirmation, the automaker said today, of Toyota's intent to begin selling an urban EV by 2010.

In a pre-show statement, Toyota's chief US spokesman also said the automaker, undaunted by the present collapse of auto sales around the globe, intends in the next few years to :

  • intensify the launch of conventional hybrid models;
  • push development of plug-in hybrids that can run solely on electric power for extended periods, and ;
  • use concepts like the city EV to expand its alternative vehicles efforts beyond the hybrid technology it has helped perfect.
Toyota's hybrid push begins Sunday with the 2010 Prius and 2010 Lexus HS250h hybrids being unveiled during the auto show's opening media day.

iQ With Batteries

Photos released today (top, right and below) show the Toyota electric car, the FT-EV Concept, as a tiny two-seater based on the popular Toyota iQ urban commuter car launched last year in Japan.

Toyota says the FT-EV concept is an attempt to examine a car that would fit the needs and lifestyle of an urban dweller who drives no more than 50 miles a day and uses public transit for longer trips.

"Last summer's $4-a-gallon gasoline was no anomaly, it was a brief glimpse of our future" Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said in a statement released with the photos.

"We must address the inevitability of peak oil [the point at which global production begins to decline] by developing vehicles powered by alternatives to liquid-oil fuel, as well as new concepts, like the iQ, that are lighter in weight and smaller in size," said Miller, group vice president for environmental and public affairs at Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.

Toyota Halts All Japanese Production, Prius Included, for 11 Days Due to Poor Sales

Toyota plans to halt production at all of its plants in Japan for a total of 11 days in February and March in response to flagging auto sales, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported today.

Production of the company's once-scalding Prius hybrid is included in the slowdown. A plan to produce Priuses outside Japan starting next year -- specifically, at a new plant in Mississippi -- was put on indefinite hold three weeks ago.

The automaker in November cut its production plan by 950,000 vehicles for the business year ending in March, but the company now eyes a deeper reduction given a further deterioration in car sales, NHK said.

Toyota, which had already announced a three-day suspension at all of its factories in Japan this month, plans the additional production halt for the next two months to reduce inventories, the broadcaster said.

Calls to Toyota to confirm or correct this report were not immediately returned.

As we reported earlier today, many U.S. Toyota dealers were demanding -- and getting -- as much as $5,000 over sticker for the low-emissions, fuel-efficient Priuses during a peak in their popularity this past summer.

But in December, average transaction prices were close to dealer invoice, or as much as $2,000 below sticker and a $7,000 price decline from the market peak.

Even with that kind of price cut, December's Prius sales were down almost 50 percent from July, when both gas prices and demand for hybrids in the U.S. were soaring.

According to Toyota sales reports, the automaker sold about 20,000 fewer Priuses in 2008 than in 2007.

Toyota Australia's chief has reaffirmed that without government help the company's hybrid car would not be built in Australia.

The statement came as analysts warned that Holden and Ford might not have sufficient funds to develop a green car here.

Toyota chief Max Yasuda said the company had got what it requested from the Federal Government's green car innovation plan. Without federal and state government support, "hybrid investment would not have come to Australia", he told a Committee for the Economic Development of Australia lunch in Melbourne.

"Instead, we would have imported the vehicles from Thailand or Japan."

ANZ senior industry economist Julie Toth said the dire state of America's car giants meant Holden and Ford Australia would not get the necessary funding from Michigan to develop a green car, even with a Federal Government subsidy on offer.

Industry analyst John Mellor said emerging Asian car companies would find Ford Australia or Holden a good buy.

Mr Mellor said Indian car maker Tata, which recently bought Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford, should consider buying all or part of Ford Australia.

He suggested China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, which has a majority stake in Rover, may consider buying Holden from GM.

The emerging Asian car companies would be in a good position to take advantage of Australia's green vehicle fund, he said.

So far, only Toyota, the world's No.1 car maker and Australian market leader, has taken advantage of the Federal Government's $6.2 billion, 13-year green car program.

Mr Yasuda said Australian research had a role to play in developing Toyota's hybrid vehicles.

While most research was done in Japan, "we can bring those advanced technologies into Australia and adjust them to local conditions".

He said LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) was abundant in Australia, so Australian research and development could contribute to the technologies being investigated for the hybrid cars - fuel cells, bioethanol and improved fuel efficiency of regular petrol engines.

Mr Yasuda said he hoped the Australian car industry could eventually stand alone. "Using this proper policy setting, we want to become independent from government, as in Japan," he said.

Mr Yasuda said unless global warming and energy issues were addressed, there would be no future for cars.

"Toyota has made a ... commitment to technological innovation for sustainable mobility - that is, a society that harmonises mobility, people and the planet," he said.

Mr Yasuda said that two years ago Toyota Australia put in place a plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 13% by 2011. "By last year, we managed to achieve a 30% reduction," he said, with further cuts planned and new targets to be set.

Water consumption had been cut by 31%, waste per vehicle by 34%, and CO2 emissions in logistics were down 21%.

"We have developed a just-in-time process that allows us to receive the aluminium from our supplier in liquid form rather than a stockpile of ingots," Mr Yasuda said.

"This saves substantial energy as we don't need to reheat the aluminium for our casting process."

Even the paint robots now dispensed exactly the right amount of paint to each car. "This eliminates the need to flush paint lines with solvent every time we need to change colours," he said.

Mr Yasuda said Toyota was looking at a wide range of technologies - alternative fuel engines, diesel engines, petrol engines and electrical energy - as steps towards developing the ultimate eco-car.

By 2020 Toyota would have hybrid systems in all its factories. "The products will be there. It's up to consumers after that," he said.

Toyota to develop new small SUV for Europe

Toyota is developing a small SUV to contend in the increasing small SUV segment in the European market, currently dominated by the Suzuki Jimny and the Suzuki SX4 (according to 2006 sales results), with Toyota-owned Daihatsu coming in third place with the Daihatsu Terios.

Instead of coming in with the Daihatsu-based Toyota Rush which would be pointless in a mature market that already has the Terios, Toyota is developing a new small SUV that will be based on second generation Toyota Ist/Scion xD underpinings (which also form the base of the Yaris), with styling largely drawn from the Toyota Urban Cruiser concept back unveiled last year.

Looking at the choice of platform and its competitors, it would most likely be an urban “cross” SUV rather than one that can do any offroading.

Toyota Hi-CT Concept

The Toyota Hi-CT is a small hybrid car concept with 3,330m x 1,695mm x 1,780mm dimensions. It uses plug-in hybrid technology, allowing it to be charged with an external power source. Power from the on-board battery can also be used to power devices through an on board 100V AC socket.

Looks like it dropped on us from the future, but rather boring at the same time… most of the concepts at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show were of this genre. Apparently everything started going this way in the past few years, boring “green” concepts that looked pretty much the same - small and light with tiny engines or motors.

TOKYO 2007 LIVE: Toyota RiN Concept

The Toyota RiN, whatever that stands for, is the world’s biggest car company’s take on designing the car of choice for the health freak of the future. With a massive greenhouse, seats that keep your spine in its proper position, an oxygen-level conditioner and humidifier, plus a meter that gauges your mood through the steering wheel and then displays a colour based on your psychological state, Toyota thinks it can make better, happier motorists, that are more aware of nature and the society that infuses it.

Focusing on â€Å“increased comfortâ€ and â€Å“serene, healthy livingâ€ features include leaf-shaped foot pedals and sliding doors with glass that wraps underneath the floor providing a view of the road below. Plus, you can motor along (supposedly) knowing that when your headlights are on, you won’t blind any pedestrians or oncoming motorists because the light is thoughtfully being distributed to avoid such stresses.

The design language is based on the deep-rooted and tall-growing Yakusugi tree (a variety of Japanese cypress) for its exterior and interior design to express both “harmony with nature” and “healthy mind and body”.

But seriously, if Toyota could implement a few of the less crazy ideas into future models then perhaps we may see a world without road rage and happy, smiling faces in every car and less occurrences of heart problems on the road.

Toyota FT-MV Concept

This looks very similiar to a Toyota Alphard with the latest in a series of Toyota grill designs slapped on, but it is actually the Toyota FT-MV concept that will make its appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show, opening for the press beginning tomorrow and for the general public later.

It is designed to fit 6 luxuriously, and the middle two seats have fully automatic ottomans, a kind of foot stool. It’s first class travel for those who need more space than what an E-segment luxury sedan can provide, similiar to the direction the Mercedes Benz R-Class took, which is also a 6-seater luxury MPV.

This info is from a pre-motorshow preview release so more details will be available tomorrow when the motorshow starts.

Toyota iQ to use 2-cylinder motorcycle engine

The production version of the Toyota iQ will use a 2-cylinder 1.0 liter motorcycle-based engine, according to two Toyota executives in an interview with Automotive News Europe under the condition of anonymity. The engine will be designed in collaboration with Yamaha, which might also manufacture the engine for Toyota.

Toyota and Yamaha have worked together before on many engine projects. The high revving VVTL-i 2ZZ-GE was designed together with Yamaha, and was Toyota’s first all-aluminium engine. It is used in the Toyota Celica and the Lotus Elise. The 3S-GE and the 3S-GTE (but not the 3S-FE) also used Yamaha-tuned heads. Yamaha also contributed to the legendary 4A-GE. These modern days, Toyota still gets car engines such as the 4GR-FSE 2.5 liter V6 from Yamaha, and it is used in cars like the Toyota Mark X and the Lexus IS250.

The inline-2 engine will help reduce the iQ’s engine bay length, with the transmission being able to be located within the engine block and other usual engine bay space hogging culprits like air conditioning module being able to be bolted on the side of the engine. The whole engine module with ancillaries bolted on will be a single tall compact unit, installed in the front of the car.

TOKYO PREVIEW: Toyota Crown Hybrid Concept

Nothing much is known about the new Toyota Crown Hybrid Concept that will be displayed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show other than a list of new features to be showcased - so we will have to wait until the motorshow rolls by to find out exactly what these new technologies are.

Anyway onto the features - the Toyota Crown Hybrid Concept will features Toyota Hybrid System II, an evolution of the current system being used in production hybrid vehicles - this uses a two-stage motor speed reduction device which helps achieve smoother acceleration, better fuel efficiency, low emissions and lower noise.

A new Finegraphic Meter TFT LCD display will be employed in the interior to provide information to the driver in an easy to see and understand manner - this could finally make its way into Toyota vehicles the same way Optitron started being used in Lexus cars first, so I think we should pay attention to this particular technology.

Vehicle stability will be enhanced with VDIM and active steering control, which I think has already made its debut on cars like the Toyota Mark X ZiO - using an optimal balance between drive power, steering and braking to help regain control of the vehicle in emergency cases. For passive safety, the car has 10 SRS airbags.

Like the Toyota Crowns before it, this new concept will likely be a front engine, rear wheel drive car. It is Toyota’s largest sedan and is about the same size as a Lexus LS.

An interesting fact to share: many Toyota sedans have been named after variations of the word Crown. There’s the Toyota Corona, where Corona is latin for crown, and there’s also the Corolla, which means small crown and usually refers to the small center “crown” of a flower. The Toyota Camry gets its name from kan-muri, meaning small crown.

New JDM Toyota Vanguard 7-seater SUV

Toyota has launched a new JDM-only SUV for the Japanese market called the Toyota Vanguard. The new mid-sized SUV is based a long wheelbase version of the third generation Toyota RAV4, but features 7-seats with an electrically foldable third bench.

Two engine options are available - a 170 PS 2.4 liter 2AZ-FE mated to a Super-CVT-i continuously variable transmission, and a top of the range 280 PS 3.5 liter 2GR-FE V6 mated to a 5-speed Super ECT gearbox. The inline-4 engine makes 224Nm of torque at 4,000rpm while the V6 puts out 344Nm of torque at 4,700rpm.

All variants come with Toyota’s Active Torque Control 4WD system which works hand in hand with the Vanguard’s S-VSC (Steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control) system to keep its 7 passengers safe if you happen to lose control of the car.

Toyota TRD Aurion full details and photos

Toyota has released full details on the Australian market Toyota TRD Aurion that was first shown in March this year. The Australian Toyota Aurion is basically the same car as the Toyota Camry we get from Thailand locally, however Australian specs call for much larger engines. While the Aurion already gets a 3.5 liter V6, the Aurion TRD has it’s powertrain supercharged with a four-lobe Eaton Twin Vortices Series supercharger to produce 323 horsepower at 6,400rpm and 400Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, matched to a 6-speed automatic with sequential shifting that sends power through the front wheels.

This engine is found in both the 3500S and 3500SL variants of the Toyota Aurion TRD. The Toyota Aurion TRD 3500S comes with a sports suspension, 19-inch wheels and special TRD body kit, while the Toyota Aurion TRD 3500SL adds Smart Entry, Smart Start, full leather interior, parking sensors, dual-zone air-conditioning and a special rear bumper reinforcement to add rigidity to the car. 0 to 100km/h for both cars is rated at 6.1 seconds which will definitely knock you back into your chair, and it goes on to a top speed of 250km/h.

To reign in all that power, the TRD Aurion is equipped with 325×32mm front ventilated discs with twin 40.5mm piston aluminium calipers, and 310×18mm ventilated rear discs with single 40.5mm piston aluminium calipers.

The Aurion TRD’s fat body has sufficient wheel size to match, ensuring fender gaps are minimal as well as ensuring all that power and torque gets down to the pavement properly. The car uses 19 inch TRD wheels wrapped with 245/35ZR19 Dunlop Sport Maxx performance tyres. While the body has the obvious TRD bodykit that you can see in plain sight, there are a few enhancements that you cannot see - better rear under-body bracing and undercarriage aerodynamic enhancements. A sports muffler reduces back pressure by 15%, and the muffler tips are nicely integrated into the rear bumper design, flanking the diffuser.

The four-lobe Eaton TVS Supercharger has a few advantages over three-lobe supercharger designs, with the key benefit being greater thermal efficiency that in turn lowers inlet manifold temperature - and we all know cooler intake air is better. Other benefits of the TVS blower’s design include a higher pressure ratio, increased airflow capacity for the same supercharger package size, increased RPM operating range, higher efficiency and quieter operation, improved fuel economy at cruising speeds and instantaneous boost response.

While you cannot really expect a Camry/Aurion to handle, TRD Australia has retuned the suspension setup of the Toyota Aurion TRD. The suspension system was developed in Australia and lowers the base model Toyota Aurion Sportivo (normal Aurion with a Sportivo kit) by 12mm. Front spring rate has been increased by 11% and rear spring rate by 10.5%. The Aurion TRD uses 25mm diameter stabilizer bars at the front, and 16mm diameter stabilizer bars at the rear.

Wheel alignment settings are also new. Front toe-in has been increased for improved steering feel and response, while the rear suspension has a neutral toe to improve turn-in and responsiveness, creating the effect of a nimble car around the bends. Of course, the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres help as well.

The next vehicle to come out of TRD Australia will be the Toyota TRD Hilux, sporting a supercharged 4.0 liter V6 engine. Power figures for the TRD Hilux have not yet been announced.

Toyota Rush Long Wheelbase suitable for Malaysia

UPDATE #3: The 7-seater Toyota Rush has been launched in Malaysia! - Click for details, specifications, photos and pricing.

UPDATE #2: The long wheelbase version of the Toyota Rush has been spotted being transported on trailers in Malaysia! Click here to view spyshots.

UPDATE: Perodua has announced that a new Kembara will be launched in mid-2008. It is expected that the new Perodua Kembara replacement will be based on the Daihatsu Bego/Toyota Rush. Click here for more details.

In Malaysia, Toyota seems to be missing a model in the small monocoque SUV segment, an area currently dominated by models such as the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape. The current Toyota RAV4 is just too expensive as it is a CBU import. One model that might be able to fit that area but not exactly because of engine size is the Toyota Rush, but most of us are hoping that it will come to Malaysia as a Perodua Kembara replacement model.

However, in the past with certain models that have both a Daihatsu and a Toyota model (a strategy the Toyota group has used in neighbouring countries like Indonesia), Malaysia has seen it introduced as a Toyota instead, perhaps because of Toyota’s stronger badge value. Stick a Toyota badge on anything and it will sell because of Toyota’s reputation for perceived reliability and the trust the automobile-buying public has for the company. We’re talking about the Toyota Avanza as a case study, which also has a Daihatsu-badged sibling called the Daihatsu Xenia.

While we might have the Rush come in as a Perodua to replace the Kembara, let’s not discount the fact that it could possibly come in as a Perodua-assembled Toyota instead (as the Avanza is now). Now many will argue that the Rush is too compact to be a Toyota, but there is actually a long wheelbase version of the Toyota Rush that is sold as a 5+2 seater vehicle.

The normal wheelbase Bego/Terios/Toyota Rush has a wheelbase of 2,580mm but this stretched Indonesian version has a wheelbase of 2,685mm! There is a historical precedent, as Daihatsu Indonesia’s Taruna F-series was a stretched 5+2 Terios! Compared to the new Honda CR-V, the CR-V has a shorter wheelbase of 2,620mm.

The engine still remains as a Daihatsu-based 1.5 liter VVT-i though, the same 3SZ-VE unit as the one currently in the Toyota Avanza 1.5 making 109 PS at 6,000rpm and 141Nm of torque at 4,400rpm.

The short wheelbase version was recently awarded 4X4 Magazine’s 4X4 of the Year 2007 award, and according to 4X4 Magazine, “was the only one whose character stood out compared to its competitors, invoking the image of a cross-country adventure.”

So yes, imagine 5+2 seating similar to the Avanza, with sub-RM100K price tag, and a Toyota badge. Do you think it’ll sell?

Toyota reveals Valvematic technology

Toyota has something new up it’s sleeves - Valvematic, an evolution of the VVT-i mechanism which now incorporates continuous valve lift control together with VVT-i’s existing valve timing control. Valvematic also eliminates the need for a throttle valve, instead controlling the volume of intake air using valve lift instead.

According to Toyota, an improvement of 5% to 10% can be seen with fuel efficiency, as well as an improvement of 10% with the power output on a similiar engine displacement comparison. Toyota also mentions reduced CO2 emission as well as improved acceleration responsiveness.

The first Valvematic-equipped engine will be a 2.0 liter model, most likely a replacement for the 145 horsepower 1AZ-FE engine which has been pretty much slotted with different tune levels into all Toyota cars in the C-segment and above. The trademark “Valvematic” was registered by Toyota a few months ago, so alot of people have been expecting this. One of the first few cars to get the new Valvematic 2.0 liter engine are the 2.0 liter versions of the recently launched twin sedans Toyota Allion and Toyota Premio. The 2.0 liter variants are set to debut in Winter 2007.

The new Toyota Valvematic 2.0 liter engine will most likely be christened the 3ZR-FAE, and will put out 158hp at 6,200rpm and 196Nm at 4,400rpm. Being part of the new ZR engine family, variable valve timing features will be the same as the 2ZR-FE’s Dual VVT-i system - valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves.

Honda also recently announced an engine with continuous valve lift control combined with variable valve timing, a technology it calls AVTEC.

Check out a patent application filed by Toyota in March 2007 by clicking here - I think it is the patent for Valvematic. Be warned though, it’s pretty long.

Australian Toyota Hilux TRD Concept

Unlike our local 2.5 liter turbocharged non-intercooled Hilux, the Australian Toyota Hilux comes in three variants - a 2.7 liter VVT-i (found in our petrol Fortuner), a 4.0 liter V6 VVT-i as well as a 3.0 liter intercooled turbodiesel. The 4.0 liter V6 is good for 235 horsepower and 343Nm of torque between 2,400rpm to 4,800rpm. To quality for this concept truck to have the TRD badge on it, what Toyota has done is fit a supercharger to the V6. Official power output has not been disclosed, but expect something in excess of the 320 horsepower range.

The bodykit has TRD all over it, with the letters TRD embossed above the front grille. The front bumper has some very nicely done foglamp inserts, and looks perfect for showcasing a shiny intercooler in the central air intake.

2009 Toyota Matrix Unveiled

Toyota has chosen SEMA as the venue for unveiling its new 2009 Matrix, and gotten into the spirit of the show by showing off a complementary tuner variant as well.

Toyota has grand aspirations for the new Matrix, and set ambitious goals while developing the new car. The aim was to make the 5-door hatch more coupe-like in appearance, while increasing the utility that customers have come to expect in the Matrix.

For the 2009 model year, the Matrix will come in three grades; Standard represents the (aptly titled) base model, S, and XRS get more aggressive body packaging, larger wheels and tires, and appropriately upgraded bells and whistles.

The Matrix will offer two engine choices, 1.8- and 2.4-liter inline-fours with 132 and 158 horsepower respectively. Buyers will have their choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic mated to either engine.

Is Toyota’s newest Matrix a step backwards, or two in the right direction? Say your piece in comments.

TOYOTA UNVEILS ALL-NEW COROLLA MATRIX AT 2007 SEMA SHOW
LAS VEGAS, October 31, 2007 - - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new second-generation Corolla Matrix at a press conference today at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.
The Toyota Matrix, the sporty five-door vehicle that helped redefine the concept of a crossover utility vehicle, has been redesigned for the 2009 model year to offer performance that matters for driver enjoyment.
“The Matrix concept was based on blending the functionality of an SUV, the style, image and performance of a sports car with the affordability of a subcompact sedan,
